COACHES ANNOUNCE THIS YEARS TEAM AWARDS
AS SELECTED BY THE COACHING STAFF
BLOOMSBURG HUSKIES MVP
COLTON ARIZINI
MVP - Colton Arizini: Colton was the go to guy when the going got tough. His teammates and the coaching staff would look to Colton to get the team going. Coach McGrady put a lot of pressure on the shoulders of Arizini as the on and off ice leader as well as the locker room leader. Colton carried the load well leading the team in scoring 29pts, goals scored 15, power play goals 7 and game winning goals 4.
Colton was a major contributor during the off season with Coach McGrady to get the team going in the right direction by getting in the DVCHC and handling the stress of being Defending Champions and losing 9 seniors from the Championship season. Congratulations to Colton Arizini - MVP. |
HUSKIES OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
DARREN BARDER
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR - Darren Barder: Darren was the guy you went to when things got crazy in the offensive zone as the team looked to Barder to get a important goal or just to calm things down. Darren would do things with the puck under pressure that coaches look for in a offensive leader. He can make that quick goal to get the team back in the game or set up a play with his shifty stick handling skills.
Darren led the team in DVCHC play in PPG with 3 and was a constant threat on the ice in DVCHC action. Congratulations to Darren Barder |
HUSKIES DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR
AUSTIN GOWER
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR - Austin Gower: Austin was the workhorse on the defense logging lots of ice time. He would come up with the big hit or clutch defensive play to settle things down. Austin has a big shot from the point and works down low in the offensive zone to set up the offense. Austin had 2 power play goals in DVCHC league play and is always a threat on the point. His 9 assist placed him third among defensemen in team scoring. His end of the year injury was a major setback in playoff action and was deeply missed on the blue line.
Congratulations to Austin Gower |
HUSKIES MOST IMPROVED PLAYER
LUCAS STYLES
MOST IMPROVED PLAYER - Lucas Styles: Lucas was a Freshman this season and his Most Improved Player award was mostly gaining the confidence to play at the collegiate level. Lucas ended up centering on the top line with Arizini and Zeintek. He was one of the top face-off players on the team. He led all freshmen in scoring with 13 goals and 5 assist. He was a iron-man playing in all 21 games in his freshmen season.
The coaching staff is looking to Styles to be a big leader in his second season for the Huskies. Congratulations to Lucas Styles |
HUSKIES LEADERSHIP AWARD
COLTON ARIZINI
LEADERSHIP AWARD - Colton Arizini: Colton was handed a large load by first year Head Coach McGrady as team Captain and Club President. It was the fund raising to getting everyone to location for the bus to just the daily day to day operations of running a hockey team and then add getting into a new league. Colton handled the job well and is the guy the players went to for help, and Coach went to for the on campus stuff like all the paperwork needed to be filled out for the operations end and dealing with University administrators.
Colton stepped up and at times exceeded what was expected. Most of the players have no idea what was asked of Colton to keep operations running smoothly during the season. Congratulations to Colton Arizini |
HUSKIES SPORTMANSHIP AWARD
COLTON ARIZINI
SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD - Colton Arizini: Colton is a very passionate hockey player and his sportsmanship before during and after a game is always very visible. He wants nothing more than for Bloomsburg Ice Hockey to grow and move on to the next level. Colton always was trying his hardest to make the club a strong contender and you could see this each and every game. His sportsmanship was seen by the opposition as he competed to win each and every game.
Congratulations to Colton Arizini |
HUSKIES COACHES CHOICE AWARD
MATTHEW ZEINTEK
COACHES CHOICE AWARD - Matthew Zeintek: Matt last season was selected as the most improved player, this season he was the player heavily relied on to score big goals and kill off a penalty for the Huskies. Matt had 11 goals, 3 on the power play and 11 assist and 1 short handed goal. He skated on the top line with Arizini and Styles. Coach McGrady would use Zanny as the guy to keep things together off the ice and at the University. He and Ryan Thomas were often brought together and told to do certain things off the ice to keep things under control. Matt is definitely a good leader and his hockey and skating skill just make him a important part of the future of Husky Hockey.
Congratulations to Matthew Zeintek |
HUSKIES COACHES CHOICE AWARD
RYAN THOMAS
COACHES CHOICE AWARD - Ryan Thomas: Ryan is a player who Coach McGrady looked too, to keep things moving forward. He was the guy that was looked to as a mediator and problem solver in the locker room and at the University. On the ice he was the guy who would make the big hit to spark the team and get everyone going. He was the guy that would be looked for to settle things down and be the quarterback on the offense with his team leading 17 assist. Ryan will be expected to resume the role next season and be the go to guy both on and off the ice.
Congratulations to Ryan Thomas |
HUSKIES DEDICATION AWARD
COLTON ARIZINI
DEDICATION AWARD - Colton Arizini: Colton's dedication to making the Club better and his passion for the game can only be seen by people who know and work with Colton closely. He has a tremendous Passion for the sport of Ice Hockey and his dedication to make the Club better is simply amazing. It would be at all times of the day that he was tasked with simple and sometimes complicated things for the Club. Then on top of all this is his school work and keeping his grades up. As a Senior Colton's Dedication was second to none. He is truly a dedicated Club Leader and passionate Hockey Player.
Congratulations to Colton Arizini |

HUSKIES LOSE TOUGH ONE TO DII MILLERSVILLE 5-3
September 09, 2017 Lancaster, PA
The Bloomsburg Huskies opened the 2017-18 season on the road with a DII non-league game against Millersville in Lancaster, PA. Gabe LaPenna was strong between the pipes as he was tested early in the first period by Millersville. Ben Flocker scored for Millersville at 13:55 as the Huskies were facing some early jitters. Flocker scored again late in the first as Millersville skated off after one period with a 2-0 lead. The Huskies came out in the second period looking more relaxed as the large class of Freshmen settled in and started to play their game. Millersville added another tally at the 13:06 mark of the period to jump to a 3-0 lead. Coach McGrady called a timeout to calm the down his team. It seemed to work as Keth scored on a pass from Prego to finally get the Huskies on the scoreboard.
Millersville scored two more times in the second to skate off with a 5-1 lead. The Huskies came out in the 3rd and took control, dominating play as Barder scored an unassisted tally to make it 5-2. The Millersville Coach called a timeout to calm his troops as the Huskies were coming. A steady flow of penalties by Millersville gave the Huskies plenty of chances to get back in the contest. At the 11:58 mark Austin Gower ripped a shot from the point that found net and it was suddenly 5-3. The Huskies had numerous chances to get even but they fell short for a final score of 5-3.

Chris will be setting up a program to work with our incoming goaltenders both on and off the ice. Chris will travel with the team and take notes and possibly video to watch our goalies while in the net on the road. Coach McGrady says this will be a positive thing for our goaltenders and the team. Goalies can often get overlooked in practice and development. Having Chris as the goaltender coach will be crucial. McGrady and the rest of the Bloomsburg Ice Hockey team are excited welcome Chris back.
Chris is excited to continue to be a part of the program and to share his knowledge with our core group of netminders. It should be an exciting time for the team our goalies-and especially Chris.

A BUSY DAY FOR COACH MCGRADY AT THE KEYSTONE STATE GAMES

July 29, 2017 York, PA
Coach McGrady was in attendance for the Keystone State Games at the York Ice Rink in York, PA. He was going between the two ice surfaces watching U18 and U16 games. He was able to see a lot of young players that may possibly fit in at Bloomsburg and help us stay competitive in the future.
As a team, Bloomsburg has to make sure the GPA's of incoming players are up to the standards the team has set and that Bloom has the major the student wants.
Coach went into the locker room after a U16 game and spoke about the need for potential incoming players to keep their grades up in high school to show a college coach they have what it takes to play college hockey. It is a big commitment at any level of college to play the sport and stay eligible each semester.

DVCHC DII MEETING INFORMATION
May 18, 2017
President Arizini and Coach McGrady were on the mandatory conference call for the DII DVCHC and a lot of information was shared. Tom Galambos DII Commissioner and DVCHC President John Rinck ran the meeting with LaSalle, Susquehanna, Kutztown, Bloomsburg and Lafayette all present.
Topics discussed were ACHA rankings and the deadline of February 11 being the last ranking date and February 17 as the last day for DVCHC League play. This date should be kept open for makeup dates for all DVCHC teams. A question came up asking if the 18th could also be used and It seems the DVCHC is OK with that day also.
To be eligible for rankings a team has to have played 16 ACHA games against DI II or III level teams. The rankings will not count against non DII teams as per ACHA rules.
League dues was also discussed with the ACHA fee being approximately $1,600.00 and the DVCHC about the same with $300.00 going into a Selects pool, and referees fee will be $404.00 per home game added to the fee. Each game will be a two referee system as discussed and voted on at the league meeting in early May. Coach McGrady asked for some clarification on the referee fees and Tom spoke about this. The dues per team will be approximately $3,500.00 plus referee's fees added for the amount of home games played. So if a team plays 10 home games the $404.00 would be calculated and $4,040.00 would be added to league dues. All referees are paid by the DVCHC.
March 24, 2018 is set as the DVCHC All-Star date and the venue is not set as of yet. DVCHC League playoffs will be February 25 and 26 and the venue has also not been set. Aston and Wilkes Barre are on the consideration list. The auto bid for Regional's was discussed and it seems the teams want the Playoff Champion to represent the league not the Conference Champion. This will be reopened for discussion in the future when the DVCHC DII League has 8 teams which it is then eligible for auto bid by the ACHA.
John and Tom spoke about the future growth of the DII division as well and possible teams coming on board via restructuring by the ACHA. Tom thinks it will take a year of solid play for other teams to jump on board after all the GNCHC issues and the folding of the league.
The Vice President position for DII was discussed and Coach Ed McGrady and Coach Drew Wright of Susquehanna were the two candidates with interest for the position. John asked all teams present if and other members with interest should be placed on the list so a vote could be taken via a cpu vote. Drew withdrew his name from consideration and Coach McGrady was placed in office with full consent of the other teams present. John welcomed Ed to the DVCHC Executive board as the DII representative.
Tom and John advised teams to get busy scheduling as most non league teams are filling up dates quickly. Coach McGrady advised the other clubs he would send out available dates for Bloomsburg for scheduling and that we are front loaded with dates due to lack of available ice in the area. There are just two ice sheets in a 65 mile radius for 7 college teams, varsity and junior varsity high school local travel teams and 2 Jr teams one being a tier 2 Jr A team and all the men's leagues and house teams.
John mentioned that the DII division in the future can have their own meeting dates rather than sit in on all of the DIII business. All members are welcome to attend those meetings though.
Meeting was adjourned and the next meeting will be in December or if any other teams come on board a conference call will be set up.

GNCHC TEAMS VOTE TO JOIN DVCHC AS DII LEAGUE

Great news for the GNCHC teams as they have officially moved to the DVCHC as a DII league and have been officially accepted into the League. DVCHC Commissioner John Rinck is excited about the new league and wants to see a DVCHC DII team at the Nationals this coming season. ACHA DII Commissioner Jay Peacock and DVCHC President John Rinck both feel we can get to 8 teams quickly once the announcement is made to the DVCHC teams and get the auto-bid in place with 8 teams.
LaSalle, Lafayette, Susquehanna, and Bloomsburg President Arizini and Coach McGrady were all on the call with Jay Peacock ACHA DII Commissioner and John Rinck DVCHC President. John spoke on behalf of Kutztown for their vote to join and it was a unanimous 5 votes with Muhlenberg not present because of a coaching change and John said he will reach out to them to advise them of the vote.
The league will fall under the ACHA North East Region and will play a 12 game schedule right now with two against each team.
Teams need to play 18 games overall to be ranked and eligible to play in the Nationals. A possible tournament was talked about to get those games against other DII teams to reach the 18 game ACHA requirement. Both John and Jay mentioned numerous teams as possible new teams for the new DII league.
A college showcase is scheduled for Nov. 17, 18, and 19th., 2017 in Athens, PA. A showcase is also scheduled to be held in June in Shelton Ct. and the ACHA Commissioner asked for DII Coached to attend. Last year 90 players attended and most talked to the teams present.
John spoke about league cost and what we gain form league fees. He also talked about the 4 man referee system and the cost per ref. John spoke about league commissioners that go into each rink to check for issues with locker rooms, fans, and any issue that relates to the game. Question was brought up about who makes playoffs. John also spoke about rankings and a recent rankings meeting that Bloomsburg attended.
DVCHC League meeting is May 06th in Aston. A new DII Meeting is a possibility if all teams agree to this.
A special thanks to Jay Peacock DII Commissioner from the ACHA for all his help in getting this formulated and off the ground, and for working with John Rinck of the DVCHC to make it a reality.

GNCHC TEAMS VOTE TO JOIN DVCHC AS A DII LEAGUE

March 30, 2017
The GNCHC which was established in 2006 sadly disbanded operations after the 2016-17 season. GNCHC league coaches had a conference call with ACHA Division II Commissioner Jay Peacock to decide what the direction of team members was going to be. A lot of things were discussed about staying independent or joining a established league. The unanimous decision to go the route of joining and becoming members of the DVCHC as a DII League with possibly 6 to 8 teams and possibly more next season was welcomed by all.
Both Club President Arizini and Coach McGrady were happy about the decision and it is a positive thing for Bloomsburg Hockey to be in the DVCHC. It can only make the program better to be under a established banner like the DVCHC as a DII League.
Commissioner Peacock of the ACHA DII is going to get together with DVCHC President John Rinck to lay out the groundwork and get everything organized. A second phone conference will be set up and DVCHC President Rinck will be on hand.
Now we just have to wait for 2017-18 training camp in September to begin as DII Members of the DVCHC.

GNCHC AND ACHA DII COMMISSIONER TO MEET ABOUT FUTURE OF LEAGUE

March 25, 2017
The Coaches from the now disbanded GNCHC and ACHA DII Commissioner Jay Peacock have agreed on having a conference call meeting to discuss the future of the now defunct league on March 30, 2017.
Commissioner Linda Punturiero advised the members during the season that she would be folding the league and this would be the final season. She looked for someone to take over the operations of the league but never made a aggressive move to turn over the operations.
Bloomsburg team President Colton Arizini and Head Coach McGrady have been involved in the discussions since the announcement. The GNCHC now has six teams in limbo on where they will be playing for the upcoming season. This all hopes to be resolved on March 30th.

THE FORGOTTEN IN THE HOCKEY FAMILY
NOT AT BLOOMSBURG
BRISTOL, PA
Your team just won the GNCHC League Championship! The whole team is excited and everyone is celebrating. Do you remember those early morning days as a Squirt, PeeWee, Bantam or Midget and who brought you to the rink? Do you remember the cost of skates or sticks and league or team fees that got you here to this point in your hockey career? It is all a blur and we tend to forget the small things like our parents, wives or girlfriends that make a sacrifice living with a HOCKEY PLAYER.
It is a tremendous sacrifice growing up, and it is so important to include those who helped along the way.
CHAMPIONS are not born.
They have to WORK HARD TOGETHER and WIN TOGETHER.
Then comes the CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

BLOOMSBURG LOOKING AT NEW LEAGUE FOR 2017-18 SEASON
Feb. 21, 2017 - Bloomsburg, PA
Team President Colton Arizini and new Head Coach Ed McGrady are in talks with 2 leagues to transfer to at the end of the season. The GNCHC Commissioner Punturiero advised all teams it is ceasing operations at the end of the season. A group is trying to revamp the league and the ACHA seems to think we should stay as our own league.
There are 2 other leagues which seems to be the perfect fit for Bloomsburg along with staying in the GNCHC. We have been told that a DII Division could be formed in the one league and the other league is almost at capacity as per their league by-laws.
Team President Colton and Coach Ed have been working behind the scenes dealing with all the particulars.
